I have a physic grandson named Sidney, for whom I wrote The Sid Series ~ A Collection of Holistic Stories for Children. There was a time when Sidney was in my house. He was about four or five years old. We were sitting together in front of the computer when I asked him to go and retrieve something from another room in the house. He got up and started toward the door and then just stopped short.

I said, “Sidney, what is it? Do you see something?”

“Who is that?” he replied.

Oh, dear. I knew he had seen something—probably the spirit of a little boy that I had seen flash through my foyer just days before Sidney’s visit. “Is it a little boy?”

“Yes,” Sidney confirmed.

I said, “Well, he doesn’t belong here in our house. Let’s call upon archangels Michael and Chamuel and ask them to take this little boy into the light where he can find people who know him and love him?”

After a few moments, Sidney turned around smiling and said, “He’s gone!” Then he proceeded out the door like nothing strange had happened. That confirmed what I had suspected all along—Sidney could see in the spirit world.

Ghosts Moving Things in Your House

I was working with a client whose mother had been abusive to her. I’m a freelance writer and editor by trade. While editing Elizabeth’s book, I began to have some strange occurrences in my home. I awoke one Saturday morning to a thud. Something in my closet had fallen. Upon opening the door, I noticed my winter boot in the floor. This was strange because my boot had been in the top of the closet in a box with the flaps closed down. How it got out of the box and into the floor, to me, could only indicate the presence of an entity.

Knowing that I would have to deal with it—probably do a clearing with some sage, or some type of meditation, or calling on my guides—I decided to eat breakfast first. I joined my husband in the kitchen where I had a bowl of yogurt in a glass bowl. I had just finished the last bite when I noticed the drape in the dining room was cockeyed. I went to straighten the drape. I was standing in a chair and my husband was leaving the room when the bowl I had just finished eating my yogurt in exploded into about 25 pieces.

I knew I had an entity in the house so without further delay, I went into my mediation room, lit a candle and some sage, called on my guides, and asked the entity, “Who are you and what do you want?” She did not want me to write the book for my client because it was tattling on her and exposing her misdeeds done while in body. I sent the ghost on her way and tried to finish the book for the client. However, the client seemed to have disappeared. She did not answer my emails or return my phone calls and I do not know to this day what happened to her. I had no choice but to abandon the project.

Being Watched by a Ghost

The veil was thin that November day in 2010 when I was keeping my grandsons at their home. My son and his wife were away for a week celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary. Within a matter of hours of being the only adult in the house, I began sensing an ominous presence—especially whenever I was in the bedroom and or bathroom. It was eerie and I felt like I was being watched. I intuitively knew that the spirit was my daughter-in-law’s father. Perhaps “sperm donor” is a more fitting term for him. She never knew the man because he abandoned her family when she was about a year old. Since this was not my home and I didn’t know if my daughter-in-law wanted her father around in order to resolve some issue she might have with him, I set a boundary that would not allow his spirit to come near me, my grandsons, or their property as long as I was there. I let my daughter-in-law know about this when she returned and she immediately decided to maintain the boundary I had set.

There are times when a spirit has a personal message for me or another person. If I can deliver the message without causing discomfort to myself, I will try to do so. The veil was thin that November day before Amanda and my son returned home, Amanda’s mother, Kendra (“Nanna K” as her grandchildren called her), dropped by in spirit. I knew and loved Kendra and didn’t even have to ask who the spirit was. There was a lightness, warmth, and sense of love surrounding me as I heard her say, “I’m just dropping by to check on my babies. It’s good to see you here. Thank you for all you do for Amanda and the boys.” I related this message to Amanda, who received the news with tears of joy. Those are the times when I am glad I can consciously interact with spirits.

What Do Ghosts Want from Us?

As you start to clear your field and remove layers of unresolved karma under the blankets of your emotional disguise, you may find that some entities are actually asking for your help to cross into the light. If ghosts are finding you, and you are willing to help them cross over, either call upon Archangels Michael and Chamuel or send the ghosts to the nearest morgue or funeral home. They can go into the light with others who are crossing over. More than one soul at a time can use the tunnel of light created for the newly departed.

In When Ghosts Speak, Mary Ann Winkowski states that a portal of light is opened whenever someone dies and this window of opportunity remains open for a short while during which a soul can make a choice to go into the light or stay in the earth plane. Some wait too long to decide and therefore miss their chance to go into the light. Thus, they become earth bound.

Here are some of the reasons why some souls do not cross over when they first leave the body is because:

1.         They are attached to things such as jewelry, cars, houses, furniture, or places where they lived found comfort, or died
2.          They are busybodies who don’t want to leave
3.        They are seeking revenge or pursuing justice
4.         They fear judgment or punishment on the other side
5.          They want to protect the living

How Do Ghosts Remain Active for Years?

Some people believe entities are conjured by human thoughts and fed by negative emotional energy. Some believe they are the unresolved karma or crystallization that was housed in the astral body of someone who has died and was not cremated. We know that fire and smoke are purifying agents. This is why many ancient cultures performed elaborate “l`st rites” (mainly to protect the living from the departing soul) and burned the physical body on a funeral pyre. This is said to dismantle the astral body and destroy its unresolved karma, which certainly can’t go into the Light with the pure soul essence. If this is true, then it explains why we have seen such a huge increase in violence, depression, and suicide since embalming and burial became the preferred method of disposing of a body.

Regardless of whether others think entities are real or imagined, if they bother you, then they exist for you and must be dealt with. I’m finding a lot of folks coming to me to talk about their plight in dealing with the energy of earthbound spirits. It seems people are suddenly becoming more able to we see, hear, feel, or sense their presence.

Most sources I’ve studied state that earthbound spirits must feed off of energy to remain active. They target humans who have a similar fixation as their own: drug or alcohol abuse, emotional indulgences, trauma, abuse, or someone who is ungrounded and not fully participating in thehr own spiritual development. When an earthbound spirit finds a human in a state of despair, having weak or no boundaries, the earthbound spirit attaches itself to the victim’s energy field.

A person with an entity attachment may also have their electromagnetic field contaminated with the negative energy. They will feel out-of-sorts, be filled with dysfunctional thoughts, rampant emotions, and have cravings that are not their own. How to Detect the Presence of Ghosts and Other Spirits

Haunting happens - it's more popular than many people would like to think. One of the practical aspects of every book that discusses ghosts and other paranormal activities, is a way to test if your house is haunted. In other words - how to detect the presence of ghosts and spirits? There are many ways to do so, that I'm going to describe right now.

Cold Spots

One of the most popular phenomenons regarding haunting and ghosts is called "cold spots". As the name states, those are the spots of cold air that can be sensed out of nowhere. Imagine that you're walking through warm corridor, and suddenly you can sense cold space. You're making few steps forward, and it's warm again. You're going back, and cold spot is still there. It is believed for cold spots to be places where ghosts and spirits draw psychic energies to sustain their own "life" energies. Just be careful not to consider air-conditioner for paranormal activity, please.

Sensing the Presence

Another way to detect the presence of ghosts would be to literally sense a presence of someone or something, when physically there's no one around - no people, no animals. Like you stand in the kitchen, and out of no where you can sense there's someone else in the room - you're looking around, but there is nothing but dinner on the table.

Mood changes

Ghosts and spirits, depending on their nature, can change mood in single room, or whole room. Imagine that you're watching good comedy in TV and suddenly you want to cry - it might suggest there's some sad spirit in the room. Spirits and ghosts can also create happy mood, or negative or even aggressive emotions.

Objects moving

Some intelligent spirit (meaning conscious ghosts) can move objects with invisible means. Different items might disappear and then appear in completely other place, or ghosts might also move things while you watch them (it's quite an interesting view, I have to admit).

Those are active ways of detection. You can also detect ghosts with passive means, this is - by assuming that things like weird shadows, or astral lights might suggest a presence in the building. Sometimes also nightmares, or obsessive thoughts, and finally weird behaviours of animals might suggest some paranormal activity in your house.

As you can see, there are quite a few methods of detecting the presence of ghosts and spirits. Keep them in mind, but remember to remain skeptical - not every air-conditioner is ghost.

There’s a Ghost in Our House. Can We Keep Him?

American people have a great interest in the subject of the paranormal and especially ghosts. Ghost Whisperer and Medium are very popular TV shows and millions each week view Sci-Fi, Discovery, and Travel channel that air documentaries about ghosts and psychic phenomena.

Approximated one-third of Americans believe in ghosts, and twenty-three percent say they have interacted with a ghost. The truth is ghosts, angels, spirit guides, and entities are around us all the time. Their impact on us and our lives is unmistakable, but we have been taught to disbelieve in them or ignore their presence during our normal waking consciousness. If we do have a supernatural experience and share our story with others, we may be told it is only our imagination. Some people may think we are crazy.

Ghosts live in the world of subtle energy, which seems to exists outside of our physical world and beyond the range of our five senses. However, ghosts can and do interact with our physical world and have been known to open doors, hide things, make noise, move furniture, and turn electronic equipment on and off. If you have a ghost in your home, you can either banish it or you can allow your otherworldly visitor to stay. After all, ghosts are people who were formerly alive and breathing but no longer have a physical body. Like those of us in body, each ghost has a distinguishing personality. Some are loving and some are not. Others are looking for help, reassurance, or guidance. Most disembodied souls are too frightened to take their next step in the afterlife. Your coaching these “lost” souls may help them find peace and confidence to cross over into the light.

If you decide to allow a ghost to be part of your family, you must be clear about your rules, boundaries, and limitations. Let the ghost know it will have to leave if your rules are not followed. If your ghost is causing disturbances in your home, or if its behavior threatens your safety or the safety of others, or you/your family feel afraid of it, then it is time to have it move on.

Knowing how to ignore the presence and avoid the influence of entities and environmental energy can be a good thing for those who are so energy sensitive that they see, feel, and hear in another dimension much of the time. The Influence Ghosts Have upon Human Emotions

An entity is anything that feeds off your energy or emotions. Some people believe entities are conjured by human thoughts and fed by negative emotional energy. Some entities can move objects and cause electrical disturbances, but they can’t physically harm you. They can influence you by infiltrating your thoughts; and their very presence may disrupt your energy field and cause emotional upsets. In fact, some of the negativity or detrimental energy you feel right now could actually be a result of an entity in your house or one that is attached to your energy field.

A portal of light is opened when someone dies and this window of opportunity remains open for a short while during which a soul can make a choice to go into the light or stay in the earth plane. Some souls cross over almost immediately, probably because they were spirituality evolved or had their “bucket list” checked off and all their loose ends tied up. Some souls fear they may be punished and take too much time deciding whether or not to cross over and go into the light. Thus, they become earth bound. Whatever beliefs, emotions, or knowledge a soul has when departing from the body is carried into the afterlife. Many times when a soul leaves the body abruptly, it is confused and may not cross over to the other side or go into the light.

Some entities are spiteful and refuse to give up their attachment to the earthly realm. When an earthbound spirit finds a human in a state of dissension, having weak or no auric boundaries, the spirit may attach itself to the victim’s energy field. This is not a possession. I believe that only one soul can inhabit a body at a time, but a person with an entity attachment may feel out-of-sorts, have dysfunctional thoughts, emotions, and cravings that are not their own. You or someone in your family may be dealing with the energy of earthbound spirits regardless of whether you see, hear, feel, or sense their presence.

Knowledge is power. As you learn to follow your own heart and develop spiritual intelligence, you may feel the need to set boundaries with disembodied souls. That is not a difficult thing to do. Angels, archangels, enlightened beings of love, and your personal spirit guides are always ready and willing to help you with any request. Call upon archangels Michael and Chamuel to help earthbound spirits find a place of peace in the afterlife. Other methods to keep these entities away include raising your personal vibration, keeping your aura clear and close to your body, removing negative or stuck energy so these beings are no longer attracted to you.

There are times when a spirit may have a personal message for you or another person. If you can deliver the message without causing discomfort to yourself or someone else, you may want to do so in order to help the soul find closure and move on. Whenever you sense an entity around you, ask it, “Who are you and what do you need?” If the spirit is not courteous enough to answer those two questions, it should not be permitted to stay in your presence. Using your intention or a visualization, set a boundary around your body, home, office, car, possessions, or children that serves as an impenetrable wall to keep that spirit away from you and your property. Some people use salt or herbs to cleanse an area and put up the protective barrier, but all rituals and prayers use the power of intention to shift energy.

Protect yourself from the depression, anxiety, fear, addictions, suicidal tendencies, phobias, relationship difficulties, and other problems caused by entity contamination. Stand in your power and do not allow a ghost to frighten you or your children.

Out of the Mouths of Babies!

Author Yvonne Perry is the paternal grandmother of a intuitive child named Sidney, who is now nine years old. Before Sidney started school, he would stay at his grandparents’ house some weekends. They did all kinds of fun things together.

One day when Sidney was with his grandmother (known as Von-Von), he kept repeating, “Hannah, Hannah, Hannah.”All day long he called the name. Yvonne said she felt like he was trying to give her a message, but she also thought he was too young to be channeling. At about nine months old, he wasn’t even talking more than a few words.

Finally curiosity got the best of her and Yvonne called Sidney’s mom, Amanda, hoping to get some more information. Amanda had a friend who a daughter named Hannah. Amanda and Hannah’s mom gave birth within a few weeks of one another but they lost touch a few months later. The last Amanda knew about her friend was that she had a drug problem. Amanda and Yvonne said a prayer of protection for Hannah while they were on the phone. Amazingly, Sidney stopped repeating the child’s name after that.

The next week Amanda received a call from someone who was still in touch with Hannah’s family. Hannah’s grandmother had taken custody of the child because Hannah’s mother had been neglecting the baby girl.

Sidney continued to show signs of being spiritually aware. When he looked at his grandmother, he would sometimes look beside her or over her and giggle. Yvonne sensed then that her grandson was able to see in the spirit realm. That belief was confirmed one day when Sidney was about four years old.

He was with Yvonne in her office when she asked him to another room in the house to get something for her. He jumped up and started toward the door. Then, all of a sudden he stopped and wouldn’t go another step. He backed up closer to where his grandmother was sitting.

“What’s wrong, Sid?” she asked.

“Von-Von, who is that?” He pointed toward the hallway. She intuitively knew what was happening because she had seen the spirit of young boy flash across her foyer several days prior.

“I’m not sure what his name is,” she said, “but he will not harm you. Let’s call upon Archangels Chamuel and Michael.” Yvonne pulled Sid into her lap. He was still staring at the doorway.

“Archangels Michael and Chamuel,” she said, “We have the spirit of a lost boy in our house. Please come and help him see the light and go to a safe place where he can find his friends and family. Thank you.”

“He’s gone,” Sidney said. Then, he slid off Von-Von’s lap and walked through the doorway without hesitation.

Yvonne began to write about their adventures and the next thing she knew, she had a collection of stories. A Second Chance to Go into the Light

We all tend to by fascinated by what the afterlife holds. Do they cross over into the light? Do they go to a place called heaven or hell? Do they stay earthbound?

No one knows for sure what happens to people after they die, but some of the best answers to these questions comes from mediums who interact with ghosts. I have had some direct experiences that have given me first-hand information, and I have tapped into the other side many times in my intuitive work with clients over the years. Some are children, who give information that sheds light on this topic.

When we first leave the body, we retain the persona of that lifetime but eventually we cross over and get into our higher soul awareness that incorporates all the persona's we've had from all lifetimes.

From what I’ve read in When Ghosts Speak by Mary Ann Winkowski, the tunnel of light is opened at the moment of death and this window of opportunity remains open for a short while in which a soul can make a choice to go into the light or stay in the earth plane. Some people cross over almost immediately upon transitioning, probably because they were more spirituality evolved and had all their loose ends tied up. Others take too much time deciding and miss their chance and thus become earth bound.

Mary Ann is the consultant for the creators of the CBS show, The Ghost Whisperer<.em>, in which Jennifer Love Hewitt stars. Mary Ann has seen and communicated with earthbound souls since she was four years old and is known for being able to create the light and give earthbound souls a second chance to cross over. In her book, she gives several reason why souls do not cross over immediately:

• They are attached to things such as jewelry, cars, houses, furniture, or places where they lived, found comfort, or died

• They fear judgment or punishment on the other side

• They are seeking revenge or pursuing justice

• They want to protect the living

• They are busybodies who don’t want to leave

We have free will while in body on Earth, and we still have free will in the afterlife. So it’s really up to us to choose whether to cross over or stay earthbound. For souls who missed their first window of opportunity, Mary Ann says they can find a second chance at a funeral home, graveside service, or morgue where lies a body that has recently died. The passage of light that is there for that soul can be shared by other souls. This is good information to have if you are one who is visited by ghosts seeking help with crossing over.

Mommy, Who Is That Lady Standing Over There?

Most psychics and mediums I interviewed for my book, Kids Who See Ghosts, agreed that ghosts are the spirits of persons who have passed out of a body, but have not yet moved on to higher planes of consciousness. Those who see apparitions say ghosts present themselves in human form. Nature spirits (also called fairies, gnomes, elves, and leprechauns) are energy beings that children see and interact with, especially in their preschool years. Those who see them describe them as tiny creatures with seemingly translucent wings or a blinking little light with wings.

When a child sees an apparition she may ask something like, "Mommy, who is that lady standing over there?" or “What is that man doing in our house?"

Of course when adults try to see who the child is talking about they see no one, yet the child insists someone is there. They may also report seeing ghosts in their dreams, hearing things go bump in the night, having monsters under their bed, ghosts in the closet, or someone peeking in their window. This can be scary for adults as well as children. As a counselor, I know the worries parents have over helping their children feel safe in their own environment.

Don’t ignore your child's fears. It is important to her emotional development for you as a parent to eliminate such things as ghosts, monsters, and weird noises. Criticizing her about monsters or saying "there is no such things as ghosts” does not help her overcome fear. She will simply stop telling you about her experience, which may cause her even more stress.

One thing that will help reduce your child's fear is to show how calm you are about such things. Children take their cues from adults—especially their parents—and if we are upset about ghosts and strange noises, then our children will learn to fear those things too. Try to offer a logical explanation that the child can understand.

Regardless of whether or not you believe in ghosts, you can take charge of the situation. Smudge your house with sage to banish entities, do battle with the monster under the bed, or have a good, firm talk with the invisible man who keeps tapping at your child’s bedroom window. It might also help to turn on a night light in the child’s room, let her take a flashlight to bed, or play some soft music at night so she can’t hear ghostly activity.

Since science cannot prove nor disprove the existence of spirit beings, parents can’t honestly tell a child that ghosts or other spirit beings don't exist. Perhaps we should listen to our children and simply accept what they say they see.

Brother's Spirit Visits Sister at His Time of Death

A reader named Iris sent me the following story about her brother visiting her in a dream at the moment of his death. He was in the hospital and she was at home. At the end of her story she asks a question that I would like to address. "Did he just sneak to my house before the angels got a hold of him and dressed him in white?" Read on . . . Here's Iris:

My older brother Hector had cirrhosis in the liver. He was a strong Christian. He was admitted to the hospital the night of November 20 1999. It was five days before my birthday. November 25th he called my house complaining about the hospital food and wanted me to bring him some rice and beans. I spoke to his nurse and she warned me not to bring him anything because his liver wasn't filtering and any wrong food can be a toxin to him.

I visited my brother that same night and he surprised me with a piece of cake and a candle. That was so sweet of him. I explained to him about the rice and beans. We spent lots of time giggling and talking about Thanksgiving dinner.

On November 27th I had a dream that Hector came to my room and kissed my hand. He was dressed in his hospital gown. He said, " I just came to say goodbye, Sis."

That morning I woke up and my room was freezing cold and it stunk like hospital. It was 6 a.m. Everything felt so weird and off key but I got up, took a shower, and did my normal routine. That afternoon I called the hospital to see how my brother was doing. The nurse told me to come in immediately. When I got there they told me my brother was dead. "HUH?" I asked how come no one had called me. They had called while I was in the shower. I asked what time he died. They said that at 5:45 am he went into coma and his heart stopped. They tried to resuscitate him but they couldn't.

As long as I live I will never forget the fact that my brother came to me in my dream to say goodbye. I don't get it though. Did he just sneak to my house before the angels got a hold of him and dressed him in white?

To answer Iris' question, I must first of all note that this is a Christian family. Nothing wrong with that, but the western Christian faith interprets the Bible with some inaccurate things regarding the afterlife. Since there is no literal place known as heaven or hell (other than what we create in our minds; and that is done more here on earth than in the afterlife), some souls choose to hang around their loved ones—especially near the time of death and several days or week after the spirit departs from the body. Just like the soul who comes here from the Other Side and takes residence in the body of a baby, there may be some disorientation to begin with. (This doesn't seem to be the case with Iris' brother. He knew he was leaving and seemed glad to venture on.) Once the soul acclimates to being bodiless, it may move on to other realms. However, some stay around indefinitely. We might call them earth-bound spirits.

Just as in this earth life where we have freedom to choose, so it is in the afterlife. We may travel (as we do many times in our dreams) to visit other people, places, and even explore new experiences. Having a loved one's spirit visit is a very common occurrence and truly a blessing as in this case where the brother loving said goodbye to his dear sister. Isn't that a joy to know that he cared so much to do that?

The fact that he didn't return again probably means that he felt she was able to handle his departure, or that he visits in her dream state and she doesn't consciously remember it. Or, he may be giving Iris signs that she's not recognizing.

My grandfather's spirit visited me late one evening this week. He passed in 1988 and visited me quite often in the years following, but it had been probably six or more years since I last felt his presence near me. When I used to cut his hair I could smell the "old man" pheromones coming from his scalp. It was this same smell that let me know it was him when I sensed his presence in my bedroom as I was falling asleep.

Spirits communicate with us through all senses and they give us signs such as leaving an object in your path about which you might say, "Oh, my brother loved [name the item]." The fact that you are being reminded of him, is a good indication that he is popping in to check on you. You may want to read Denise Linn's book, the Secret Language of Signs to learn more about the signs God, angels, and loved one use to communicate with us.

It's so good to know that we are able to communicate our love from the Other Side to those on this earth plane. The soul of never dies.

Is That You, Jerry?

Jerry McEwen was a regular columnist for Writers in the Sky Newsletter. And, as the designer of WITS Web site in 2006, he was also a personal friend of mine. Jerry was fatally stabbed at a Kroger store parking lot in Nashville on December 18, 2007 while trying to stop a man who had just stolen a purse from a 60-year-old woman.

When Jerry died, I was catapulted into an empathetic episode like I had not experienced since I was serving as an intercessory prayer warrior for unity in the city of Muncie in the mid 1990s. This energy  I was carrying for Jerry's friends and family was so severe I had to call on a trusted friend to clear me of the grief. After that, I put up some really strong protective barriers to keep from taking on other people's energy. I really hadn't been affected much as an empath until the flood in Nashville May 2, 2010. The flood has brought many changes to our city and to the consciousness of those who live here. My business and I have been called to a new level of spiritual service.

Jerry contacted me after he died, but at the time, I really didn't have much confidence in my ability to communicate with ghosts. I was pretty sure I was hearing from him and that he was hanging around me during the weeks following his death, but I didn't want to do what he was urging me to do--contact his mom and sister (Dianne) and give them a message. The message was simple: "Tell them I am with Mason." The message didn't mean anything to me. I wasn't sure if Mason was a person, pet, bricklayer, or lodge member.

I hesitated giving them the message because I didn't know how open they were to having a stranger give them a psychic message; What if I was wrong and the message had no relevance to them? I didn't want to add to their grief. However, Jerry was insistent and at the time, I didn't know how to make ghosts go away. The only way I'd see peace from Jerry was for me to give his message to his family. So, I found their address and wrote a letter giving them my phone number and return address. I didn't hear anything from the family . . . until today.

Today, I got a letter from Dianne, stating that she now knew what the message about Mason meant. She asked me to phone her. When I did, she apologized for taking two and a half years to respond to my letter to her. Her letter to me came at the perfect time because of the message Spirit gave me about the blue jay earlier this week.

You see, my business endeavors had been taking all my time and attention over the past few years and I had not been focusing on developing my psychic skills. I did an interview with Lynn Serafinn May 5 in which I recounted some ghost activity I had encountered in the past. Like I said before, I had erected some strong barriers to keep ghosts away ever since Jerry's passing. After the interview, I marveled at how effective the protection really was. When I got the jay bird message this week, I acknowledged that I was ready to stop dabbling and get serious about developing my intuition and spiritual gifts.

Oh, and the message about Mason? She was a friend of Jerry's, who worked at the Kroger where Jerry died. He had visited with her just minutes before he walked outside and was killed in the parking lot. More than likely Jerry's spirit was hanging out around her after his death.

The Ghost Whisperer Compared to Real Mediumship

I remember the first time I saw the Ghost Whisperer on CBS, I cried through most of the show. Why? Because I finally had a clue as to why spirits were coming to me. They wanted my help. They weren't trying to harm me or make me think I was crazy! I had ran out of explanations for why I would either see, hear, sense, smell, or just "know" that a spirit was near me. I concluded that I should not have prayed for the gift of discerning spirits—one of the nine gifts of the spirit outlined in 1 Corinthians 13:4-11.

Ghost Whisperer is not an accurate portrayal of what it's really like to be a medium—the show is for entertainment purposes but it does have some truth. While I have seen spirits, this is not the usual or only way I receive messages from them. The messages are much more subtle than portrayed on the Friday night hit show. Usually I get short messages or clues that I have to interpret using my own brain and intuition. These messages are mainly to give guidance and comfort to those who have been left behind.

I'm especially concerned for children who see ghosts because Jennifer Love-Hewitt's son Aiden on the Ghost Whisperer is being taunted by evil or dark spirits known as Shadows and these spirits are threatening Melinda. Death is frightening to most people. The TV series has the potential to create more fear of death through the mention of the Shadows. People and spirits are searching for comfort and closure.  Mediums are here to reduce the fear of death and help people to accept the passing of a loved one.  I did like the way Aiden saved Melinda in the final 2010 episode by making the Shadows let go of Melinda.

At times, the show suggests that boundaries cannot be set to keep malevolent entities from harassing and interrupting our lives. This is simply not true. You can work with higher beings of light who have the ability to prevent lower entities from coming into your field or influencing your life. I learned this the hard way after being beat up by what I thought were demons (thank you, Sunday School teachers and pastors of doom). There was even suggestions that I might be possessed, which was really scary! I now know that's not the case.

Whatever you think about and believe becomes your experienced reality. When I saw myself as a helpless victim of these "shadow" beings, it empowered my imagination to experience more of the same attacks. I have asked Archangels Michael and Chamuel to stand guard around me and screen the spirits who come to me for help. I've asked them to assist these spirits in finding the light so they are not allowed to influence or interfere with my own soul's spiritual progress or have my work day interrupted. I still have a"knowing" or sensing, but I because I have this angelic filter in place, I can trust that when I do have a spirit around me, my guides have allowed it entrance because it is mutually beneficial for the spirit and me to interact with one another.
