By Valerie Olmsted
Most people are afraid of dying; not of the actual experience of death, but rather of the anticipated pain. Having had six NDE's (Near Death Experiences) myself, only one of which was in the dying body, I can shed a little light on the subject. There does not have to be pain; the pain usually comes when your Spirit comes back to the body, not when it is leaving.
The first NDE I experienced was as a toddler, when I fell off my parents' boat. I sank to the bottom of the muddy river three times before they finally were able to grab me and haul me out. There was no fear, no pain, and I found it fascinating. There was also no water in my lungs; explain that one.
The next few NDE's happened at the beginning of an accident. When the house was about to blow up, I found myself out of body, floating out in the cosmos, talking with Jesus Christ and a Council of wise ones. In the life review, I discovered that what I came to this life for had been accomplished back in my toddler years. I was given the choice of coming back to Earth or staying in Heaven. I chose to come back, to help. They showed me how difficult life on Earth would become.
When my Spirit came back into my body, I was able to stop the explosion that was about to happen, saving not only my life, but the lives of three housemates and four dogs. They just didn't appreciate the gesture when they woke up to find all the windows and doors open so the gas could air out (it was about 20 degrees in there; one guy froze his butt to the toilet seat).
The next one came during a bout with peritonitis that put me into the hospital. Two angels showed up, dragged my Spirit out of my body, raced me through the cosmos to an electrified grid, dragged me through, then slam-dunked me back into my body...and I was healed.
The whole NDE thing was getting to be 'old-hat' familiar to me. When my car was locked in a skid straight for the edge of an icy cliff, I called out to Father to pull me out of the body before we hit bottom, so I wouldn't have to feel any pain. THAT was a truly incredible experience, which included the car being pushed away from the edge at the last minute, into a snow bank on the opposite side of the road.
The next NDE happened when I was poisoned by carbon monoxide over three months. The last night, I stopped breathing at least three times. As I entered the darkness of the tunnel-where one's energy/Spirit is pulling entirely out of the body-I thought "Not my Will, but Thine be done, Father". Suddenly I was snapped back into the body. Dang.
Most notable about my NDE's is that not all of them involved the death of the body. The death would have occurred, if I had chosen to leave, but since my decision was to stay, the accident didn't continue. None of those NDE's were due to the so-called scientific explanation of the 'last gasp of the dying brain'. In fact, the extensive research into NDE's done by Dr. Jeffrey Long shows that NDE's cannot be explained by any physical means, nor are they controlled by the brain.
Metaphysicians can tell you that our Consciousness comes from the Mental Plane, which does not exist in the body. Quantum Physicists say it's in the Non-Local Mind. I am less concerned with where it resides than I am with the fact that our Consciousness is taken out of the body before it can register pain. The only time one feels pain is if the death is slow and the Consciousness refuses to detach.
The moral of the story: let go. Of course, if you choose to come back, that can be painful, as you would have to deal with whatever happened to the body. Oh, and suicides...not a good idea. If a suicide survives there is often so much trauma to the body that life becomes even more difficult. Succeeding in killing the body would not be so great either, as many times suicides wander in the darkness, alone, for quite some time.
Live your life-fully-and be grateful. Live without regrets; that makes the leaving so much easier. Truly, "Let not thy Heart be troubled".

Do Near Death Experiences PROVE There Is Life After Death (The Controversy About NDE Research)
By Danny Fredricks
What do near-death experiences actually prove? Can a dying brain actually provide PROOF that life continues on after physical death? And what are the alternative explanations? Surely no SERIOUS scientist, or doctor takes this stuff seriously, right? And does EVERYONE who comes close to death have a similar experience, and if not... why do some people have them, while others do not?
The truth is, NDE research is a very, very controversial area. It should be no surprise as well... as the implications for what this exciting field reveals, COULD revolutionize what we believe about life, and death, and what happens both before and after each... :-)
NDE's were popularized by Dr. Raymond Moody in 1975, in his book "Life after Life", although there are literally thousands of recorded near death experiences that go back to our earliest recorded history.
In recent years, with the advent of all sorts of advancements in life saving technology, more and more people are having POWERFUL, and life changing experiences at the moment of death... which seems to be shaking our understanding of the death process to it's very core.
Here is what we know, today:
1 - About 15% of all people who experience clinical death, WILL have an NDE.
2 - Most near death experiences are defined by a series of very similar, universally shared events - seeing a being of light, going through a tunnel, meeting deceased relatives, feelings of incredible peace, seeing one's body from above, having telepathic conversations, having a "choice" to return, and coming to some sort of "line in the sand" where if you cross, you can't come back.
3 - Most NDE'rs lose the fear of death completely. (over 90%)
4 - Most near death experiences do NOT have overtly religious overtones... even though they are often symbolic, espdcially in the being of light. (Westerners tend to see religious icons from "here" while Easterners tend to see icons associated with their beliefs or traditions as well)
5 - Children often report the MOST profound NDE's, and the ones well worth studying as well... as they are absent a lot of the dogma, yet retain the TRANSCENDENT elements of the experience
6 - Many near death experiencers return with psychic sensitivities that are HARD to explain away or dismiss. (including an uncanny ability to see and speak to those on the "other side" once back here)
7 - Many of the MOST common skeptical explanations for the experience have been fairly well addressed, including hallucination, lack of oxygen to the brain, and even fabrication
8 - Many well known doctors have studied NDE's skeptically... and have become convinced they are evidence that the human spirit "survives" physical death, at least for a while... and that mind and brain are NOT the same thing. (most notably amongst these are Dr. Jeffery Long, and Dr. Sam Parnia... who is the chief investigator in the AWARE study, being conducted in hospitals around the world in 2011)
Are NDE's PROOF that life continues on after death?
I guess it depends on what you consider PROOF! The fact is, they are highly suggestive, and when combined with all of the OTHER evidence out there, including psychic mediums, afterlife encounters, apparitions, etc... seem to strongly suggest that there is much more to our physical lives than meets the eye. (and that is a pretty exciting discovery in my book to boot!)

NDE Series - Discussing Spiritual Ramifications
By Steven Morse
Lately there has been a resurgence of interest in Near Death Experiences. To me this is nothing new, but the revived interest has rekindled all the old debating points. I'm asked frequently what I think about the phenomena so I thought I'd start a series to bring topics to light. As always, feel free to disagree. Personally I enjoy debate and if we all shared exactly the same opinions on a topic that cannot be absolutely proven, frankly, that would be down right annoying. Let's then put on our thinking caps and open our minds to see where this topic leads us.
Near Death Experiences (NDE) is the concept of people leaving their bodies to enter the spiritual realm after clinical death but who are subsequently revived. This is a hotly debated topic. Generally speaking, there are two sides to this argument: scientific (doctors, atheists, agnostic) and spiritualist (those believing in a spiritual afterlife).
The scientific community denies the possibility by usually stating that any experiences obtained after clinical death are mere physiological attributes gained from the dying processes of the brain. Simplified this means, the brain is "fizzling" out causing hallucinations and such. Since their stance is that there is no afterlife, there simply cannot be any true experience. To them, death is the final exit into oblivion where matter is relegated to entropic effects. Remember the laws of thermodynamics? Like a candle being blown out, there is nothing left. Absolutely nothing. We are mere animals who have come to the end.
The spiritualist community, however, sees death as a continuation of life by stepping into our true selves. They believe that we all started as spiritual beings and are transitioning back to that state. Now there are many subtopics to be examined here, but the main point is that we are more than just our physical makeup. Our spiritual being is eternal and this physical life is just a stopping point to achieve higher learning and growth.
Yes, these preceding paragraphs are simplified, but they do get to the heart of the matter. I think this is the proper place to begin the NDE series. Understand that my interest in writing this article is not to persuade anyone to a certain belief, but rather, to bring it to light so that understanding and honest consideration are given. The reason is that our spirituality must take center stage.
Why? If science is correct, what harm is there in examining the subject since nothing can come of it? However, if the spiritualists are correct, then we are undertaking a subject of great and eternal consequences. As you can tell, I subscribe to the spiritualist side. I know what I think. But, what about you? I urge you to read the following blogs and invite you to devote some personal attention to them.

Brain Injury and a Near Death Experience (NDE) Sparks Visions for an Artist
By Elizabeth Kirwin
Many artists have been deterred from realizing their fullest potential. Multiple obstacles might stand in their way: poverty, illness, injury, lack of support from family and partners, isolation, and/or little or no recognition for their work. How do artists who have strayed from their paths get back on track and continue to pour passion, time and energy into work that sustains their spirit and beautifies the world?
For this particular artist, Heather Ifversen, a life threatening head injury, caused by a fall in the bathtub, forced her to closely examine her life and dramatically change it. Brain trauma and a near death experience (NDE) and her subsequent convalescence and recovery awakened her enough so she could begin to live an authentic life again.
Ifversen's story is extraordinary and deserves to be told. She has chosen to illustrate this experience through narrative paintings. These paintings detail a profound and magical vision of the cosmos, and energies within it, which constitute the web of life. Central to her story is her self, and an astounding evolution which occurred during a period of six months or so, when she was contacted by beings made of light. Ifversen is still uncertain if these beings were real or a creation of her mind. Yet she seemed to have an ongoing conversation with them that had the effect of infusing her life with a new energy and most importantly - a drive to continue to create art. In her visions, which occurred during her waking hours, she first begged these light beings to help her regain life and full consciousness so she could come back and mother her girls, Isabella (12) and Finn (7). Slowly, as her consciousness began to reconstruct itself, and her motor skills, speech and portions of her memory returned, the one thing she was able to do in her bedridden state was to draw and paint again. "I strapped a paintbrush to my hand," recalls Ifversen, "and I began to paint the visions I saw in my head."
As she returned to life, she also reclaimed her identity as an artist. Her life as an artist had been eclipsed and almost lost as a wife, mother, caregiver and social worker. Tenaciously, like someone possessed by energies beyond her control, she clung to this identity that had always been hers. For these light beings who revealed to her the complex web of energies that form a backdrop to our existence had given her one more chance to live - and she was not going to waste it.
The work which was completed while recovering from brain trauma includes a staggering 60 paintings - completed during Ifversen's six month recovery. This art documents the strange and magnificent powers that lie behind the central truths of our world. Some may be inclined to be skeptical of Ifversen's story, but many, including energy workers and neuropsychologists might just be delighted by her revelations.
Anyone who travels the magical planes, works in the realm of faery magic, studies the mysterious pathways of the brain, or deals directly with people who have had Near Death Experiences (NDE) knows when these energies appear to be at work. In the case of individuals experiencing a 'normal life' -- a finely cloaked exterior often keeps them hidden from view. Perhaps the ordinary person is too distracted, or consumed by other matters, to see them as clearly as Ifversen has. The light beings she describes in her paintings are real enough to be painted.
According to Ifveren and others who've had these types of experience, these light beings work behind the scenes of the everyday, mundane world. Ifversen was walking between this world and that one for an elongated period of time. Having lost her ability to speak, read, or write, she chose to paint this reality. Happily, she returned to her brush, canvas and palette and used what little strength she had then to record her journey.

Dealing With Death - How to Find Peace
By Piper Cox
Death is an inevitable part of life and unfortunately we will all be touched by the finger of death at some point in our lives. It may be the death of a close friend, a beloved pet, or a dear family member. Death is a difficult thing to work through. It leaves you feeling so empty and alone. But there are ways that you can find peace after the death of a loved one.
When you lose someone close to you, your senses are flooded with a multitude of emotions. Denial, anger, sadness, and frustration are just a few of the feelings you may experience. This is perfectly normal and everyone has to go through different emotions when dealing with death.
We experience denial both when we first learn of the death and sometimes days and weeks later. Someone has made a mistake, I had a bad dream, these are just a few of the thoughts you may experience in the denial stage. Denial is stronger when dealing with accidental or sudden death. In this case denial may last longer than it does when you lose someone to an illness or old age.
Anger and frustration occurs both soon after the loss and even many years later. You wish the person was here to help you with a project or you are dealing with finances you don't understand. It is perfectly normal to feel anger toward the person you lost. After all, they left you alone. This is a natural sentiment and something that you will feel.
Sadness and grief are the first things someone thinks of when dealing with death. These are the emotions that everyone expects you to have. You are lost and missing the person so much. These feelings of sadness and grief will come and go especially through the first year as you deal with many 'firsts' without them.
So how can you find peace when you are grieving? First of all you need to understand that all these emotions are a normal part of the grieving process. You need to experience them to properly heal. It is okay to be mad at the person who died. Someday that anger will subside and you will have overcome the frustration of loss. Sadness and grief will probably be with you for life, but they get easier to deal with over time. It will not be a all consuming sadness that you feel right after the death, but it will mellow into a longing or melancholy feeling. Something you will feel only occasionally. This is normal after all you lost someone very close to you. You will always miss them and feel their loss it just won't always be painful.
Time is a great healer. Even though you may feel that you cannot survive another day because the grief is so overwhelming, you can and you will. Face each day and conquer it! Spend time with friends and read uplifting books. These things can really help when dealing with grief. There are many books written about death and dying. If you believe in an afterlife, books about near death experiences can be helpful. After the loss of my brother I read several of these books and they brought me peace. I had a better understanding of what happened when he died and where he was now.
Some days you may feel like you just can't face the world, this is okay just don't let it become a habit. Many people let grief win and overtake their lives. They become consumed in their sorrow and almost cease to function. This actually becomes detrimental to their health. No matter how hard it may seem, you need to move forward. Keep your loved ones in your heart, but allow yourself to live as well. Think about what they would want. Would they want you to suffer endlessly because of their death?
Many people turn to religion when they lose someone. Faith is a great healer and it helps us believe in a better life for both us and the person who died. Most religions teach of an afterlife where everyone is at peace and happy. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormons, believe that families will be together forever in the afterlife. This belief brings great comfort to families who have lost loved ones and especially to parents who have lost children.
You can find peace and healing after losing someone close to you. Remember that it is okay to feel a range of emotions. Time will help you overcome the anger and will dull the pain of loss. But you will always remember the person you lost. After all, they were an important part of your life.

Near Death Experiences - What Happens After We Die?
By Paula Maher
Is Steve Irwin really guiding Bindi from the "other side?" Paul McCartney believes Linda's spirit lives on!
What happens after we die? This is life's greatest mystery. Is there a life after death or is it something we have created in order to cope with the inevitable?
There are those who have died and experienced a Near Death Experience (NDE), have returned and are now certain that we are so much more than our physical bodies. A NDE is usually described as a lifting away from the body and being able to view one's self from above accompanied by a euphoric calmness as the spirit travels down a tunnel with a bright light in the center and the certainty that there is another dimension once the light is reached.
On the "Near Death Experience Research Foundation" website there is an account of an NDE recorded by Anita M. a cancer patient from Hong Kong who claims such an event took place as she "died" in hospital and doctors were frantically trying to bring her back. Drifting in and out of consciousness she could feel her spirit leaving her body. As she crossed over she felt this other dimension was actually the real world and felt free and powerful connected to something much greater, "I thought that I knew a lot more than when I was in my body", she says, "I was surrounded by loving beings, people who I seemed to know but I could not recognize from this lifetime and I was aware that they were around me all the time even when I was in the physical body and I didn't even realize then that they were looking after me all the time in the three dimensional world."
She claims her awareness was so heightened she could hear conversations between her family and the medical staff 40 feet away, which she later verified, "It's not that I could see through walls, it's just that when I wanted to know something I could see it straight away, the understanding, the visual came to me immediately. There was no such thing as time lag or separation, everything was simultaneously happening at once and it depended on what I wanted to focus. Unreal as it sounds when I was there; I felt that was the real world, not the physical. There was understanding and clarity. If only I had known this when I was in my body. I was aware that I had a choice whether to go back and return to my body. Knowing that this was real I also knew that if I was to go back to my sick body that I would be healed immediately, my body would express what spirit now knows."
Anita described her state as one of pure joy and that she was loved no matter what. She did not have to do anything to earn this love and this is something that stayed with her when she returned, "All I had to do was be myself. If everybody realized that you don't have to do anything, just the fact that you exist is enough, that knowing would alter your vibrations and this can subsequently change your life."
The Rev. Gino Concetti chief theological commentator for the Vatican newspaper "L'Osservatore Romano" said the Catholic Church is opposed to the raising of spirits but claims communication is possible between those who live on earth and those who live in a "state of eternal repose", and suggested dead loved ones could be responsible for impulses and manifestations such as in dreams. John Hooper published the reverend's comments in the "London Observer Service" in January 1997.
Gwen Carden wrote of these three accounts in "The National Enquirer" on December 22, 1998:
Her dead grandfather urged a college student to lock all the windows in a dream. She did so and discovered the next day that a room nearby had been broken into the previous night.
The mother of 9 month old baby awoke one night to see her dead mother standing by her bed looking worried as she led her to the child's bedroom. The young mum checked on her baby and discovered she had been choking on a piece of plastic.
A woman had a vision of her father who told her, "It is beautiful over here, I'm alright so don't you worry!" He laughed as he added," Now I don't have to pay for all the furniture your Mum and sister bought." A few minutes later she received a phone call informing her that her father had just died of a heart attack and received a letter not long after saying that her Mum and sister had purchased a house full of furniture on the night their Dad died.
Does life indeed continue to a world beyond? The closest proof we have are only the recollections of NDEs such as Anita M's but there have been scientists investigating such phenomenon. As it was reported on BBC News in the UK, they say they have found evidence to suggest that consciousness can continue after the brain has ceased to function.
Neurological experts have challenged these findings. Dr Sam Parnia of Southampton General Hospital in the U.K. says the consciousness is independent of the brain and no one can fully understand how the brain generates thoughts. Under examination the brain contains cells like any other who produce chemicals but there is no evidence of their capability to create the phenomenon of thought that we have. He says that the brain is needed to manifest the mind similar to a how a television set can transmit what are essentially waves in the air.
There is skepticism from sources such as The Skeptic Society and Dr Chris Freeman a consultant psychiatrist at Royal Edinburgh Hospital in the U.K. Dr Freeman claims that these experiences possibly occurred during the recovery or just before cardiac arrest and there is very little evidence that they happened when the brain was shut down.
Dr John Happs president of "Western Australian Skeptics" claims the following,"NDEs are quite commonplace and I have actually experienced them myself on at least two occasions. NDEs are very real and occur when the brain is starved of oxygen. The phenomenon has been well and truly explained in medical terms. The brain starts to shut down when oxygen is limited and peripheral vision slowly fails. That explains why people report a tunnel effect with a bright light in the center. That is exactly what I experienced when, as a competitor in judo tournaments, I was strangled into unconsciousness. There have been many reported NDEs, as you might expect although few individuals would be aware of what is happening to them from a physiological perspective so they imagine they are traveling down a tunnel towards a bright light. Add a few singing angels and an imaginative link between earth and heaven and you have a great story."
John Perkins from "Atheist Society", Melbourne, Australia says, "I believe the phenomenon exists, but not that it represents any evidence for, or experience of, an afterlife. Humans have minds, not souls. In death, the mind stops working. To believe otherwise is just superstition or willful self deception. If souls existed after death, there would be 100 billion of them hanging out somewhere, for ever. Would you really want to go there?"
The one thing that seems apparent is that there is "something" controlling the universe such as nature itself and it is a difficult concept to understand that a person's essence can just die. Birth and coincidences may well be real miracles, although there is scientific and rational explanation for both. For most, it is part of the purpose of life to continue to question the meaning of our existence and to strive for the realization that we are lovable just because we exist. It is certainly something worth pondering and who knows? Perhaps if we practice a little more kindness each day our "vibrations" may lift enough for us to perceive some answers. Or at least we would be working towards making this world right here a better place.
